Faqs

How do I use Ultra Downy in the wash?
Simply add Ultra Downy to your fabric softener drawer. For top-loaders, you can also add directly to your washer drum during the rinse cycle, or use the Downy Ball if you don't feel like waiting around for the rinse to begin. Go to OLV/LINK for more information!

What does the Ultra mean in Ultra Downy?
Ultra simply means it's a concentrated product, having most of the water removed (as opposed to non-concentrated formulations). Be sure to carefully follow dosage instructions on the bottles.

I love Ultra Downy! What other products should I try?
We’re so glad! You might enjoy Fresh Protect In-Wash Odor Shield: use with detergent and Ultra Downy liquid fabric conditioner for 24-hour odor neutralization—like deodorant for your clothes!

Do I need to use detergent with Ultra Downy?
Yes, for best results, use WITH detergent. Ultra Downy is a fabric conditioner that will provide your clothing with scent, softness, static reduction and protection from the laundry damage of stretching, fading and fuzz.

How is Ultra Downy different from Unstopables?

Ultra Downy is a fabric conditioner; Unstopables are long-lasting scent boosters, not conditioners. Fabric conditioners provide scent, softness, static reduction and protection from the laundry damage of stretching, fading and fuzz.

What's the difference between a fabric conditioner and a dryer sheet?
Both provide fabrics with scent, softness and fight static; however, dryer sheets are heat activated in the dryer, whereas liquid fabric softeners are more easily infused in the wash. Additionally, fabric conditioners reduce wrinkles, provide for easy ironing and protect from stretching, fading and fuzz that occur in both the wash & dry processes.

I no longer recommend Downy Fabric Softener.

Have you changed the formula for this product? I have always loved and appreciated my downy until several months ago when I purchased a new bottle, always the largest quantity that I could find, and found that the fragnant was different (horrible smell) and the texture was much thinner--down-right watery. I thought maybe the wrong solution had been put into a Ultra Downy bottle. Unfortunely, I used that bottle and purchased another one and another and another to find the same results. I usually bought the blue or green caps (for years) and loved them. Since these no longer worked for me, about three weeks ago, I decided to buy the pink cap, which I used to use many years ago, and found it to be equally as disgusting as the blue and green caps. I should have returned each of these last four bottles that I purchased. I convinced myself that the problem would get solved and I'd have my product back. However, that has not happened - time to find myself another product.

DOWNY Response from Downy 01/12/16

Glad you reached out. We’re sorry to have upset such a loyal consumer of ours. While we haven’t changed the scent of our Mountain Spring we did update all of our Ultra Downy and Ultra Downy Infusions to be safe to use in all washing machines and to meet the needs of HE users. The softener now appears thinner so that it flows easier from the dispenser to the rinse. Our hope with any change is that it pleases our consumers so we appreciate your feedback. We’d like to keep you in the Downy family and help you find another scent you may enjoy. Please give us a call at 1.855.236.3353 at your convenience.

Oh no, formula change was a terrible mistake

I have used and loved Downy for MANY years. Over the last few months, I have noticed a change in the product. It is much thinner and less effective. I thought maybe I bought a bad bottle, but after trying a few more bottles, it wasn't a fluke. I need to use more Downy than before and getting poorer results...much more static cling. I am so disappointed. After using Downy for as long as I can remember, I'm switching brands when this bottle is gone. Please bring back the old formula. In a few months I'll try Downy again to see if it has been improved.

DOWNY Response From Downy 08/28/15

Hi, Penny. We’re very sorry to have upset you with our updated Downy. We’ve recently modified our Ultra Downy and Ultra Downy Infusions to meet the needs of HE users and to improve it’s dispensing into the rinse cycle. This is in response to a common complaint we were receiving stating that Downy was leaving residue behind in the softener dispenser. Our new updated softener now flows easier from the dispenser to the rinse cycle. We’d like to help you find another version of Downy you may enjoy, please give us a call at 1.855.236.3353 when you have a chance.

This new formula is awful!

I was a long time customer of Downy but after using this watered down version of your product, I have switched brands and advised my family and friends to do the same. This is a rip off of a formerly great product. Can't understand why you did this.

DOWNY Response From Downy 08/25/15

We’re very sorry to have upset you with our Ultra Downy. Due to a common complaint of Downy leaving residue in the dispenser, we did recently updated all of our Ultra Downy to appear thinner to meet the needs of HE users and to improve dispensing into the rinse cycle. Even though we’ve made this change, Downy is still safe to be used in all washing machines and still provided the same great softness and static protection.
